Caring for our Country
Caring for our Country is the Government's new natural resource management program. Caring for our Country is designed as an integrated package with one clear goal, a business approach to investment, clearly articulated outcomes and priorities and improved accountability. It commenced on 1 July 2008 and integrates delivery of the Commonwealth's existing natural resource management programs, the Natural Heritage Trust, the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality, the National Landcare Program, the Environmental Stewardship Program and the Working on Country Indigenous land and environmental program.
What is the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality?
The National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) is the first of its kind, a commitment by the Australian, state and territory governments to jointly fund actions tackling two major natural resource management issues facing Australia's rural industries, regional communities and our unique environment.
The Plan commits $1.4 billion over seven years to June 2008 to support action by communities and land managers in 21 highly affected regions. It supports practical remedies such as the protection and rehabilitation of waterways, improvements to native vegetation, engineering works, and land and water use changes.
NAP investment is largely facilitated at a regional level through regional planning. At this level, the NAP is jointly delivered with the Natural Heritage Trust (the Trust).
